Review of "Aegri Somnia" Demo in English by Metal Invader:
DIMHOLD is a brand new band from Bulgaria that belongs to the Black Metal batch of these years..Although they were created as a band in 2003 many changes were made in the member list and it took them 4 years to release their first demo cd with the title “Aegri Somnia”.
It seems that DIMHOLD knows exactly how the pagan atmosphere must be. I must admit that the length of this demo is quite long, as in most cases they don’t outwear fifteen minutes and this one has the double length of them!!!Although the sound of this release is not qualitative, for a self released demo it’s quite good in fact. To be honest, the most old-school Black Metal masterpieces of the past never had crystal clear sound, but it was their own rottenness that made the whole feeling as in this demo’s case. The guitar work seems to be very thrashy, but in many spots you can feel its special vibes which mixes melody and harshness. Stanimir made a good job on the drums of this demo, as he used the drum machine correctly without spoiling the album’s feeling, as it happens in the most cases when actually the drums aren’t real. Finally, the most standout thing in this demo is the vocals that seem to have the right feeling and blizzard of the raw Black Metal standards that every successful release must have.
In conclusion, DIMHOLD has worked pretty well on what they mind to reach, the only thing remains here is their first full length album and a better production of course. This is the only way to see if this upcoming band has the right tools to bring total darkness and death upon their fans!

No, this black metal band is not hailing from the legendary forests of Tolkien, but from the Bulgarian forest of Bourgas. With a name like that, you expect either very epic or very raw black metal: should you have guessed the second, you are dead on target. Four years after the band started, the band came out with this EP, which consists of an intro and five songs.
The music of Dimholt can be categorized in the veins of the very old Darkthrone and especially Mayhem, also due to the vocals that reminds me a lot of Attila (just listen to the sixth song, including the drums or the beginning of track three which reminds me a lot of "Freezing Moon"). The difference in level is rather big; there where the Norwegian ancestors of black metal still to manage over a decade later, this Dimholt starts to become a bit boring after several times of listening. Don't get me wrong: there is nothing wrong with the number of the beast, but it is when you have heard things like this 666 times or more. After the standard acoustic intro (called "Falling Asleep", ahum) Dimholt bursts into the title track without mercy, yet in the break with clean vocals this ferocious character is killed by the band themselves. Especially these clean vocals are very monotonous and don't do the music of Dimholt a favor.
By adding small elements of death and thrash, and the use of fast versus slow passages the band tries to add some variation to its music, and that is the very reason why this EP is rewarded by a narrow sufficient mark. Yet that still means that the music just won't stick. The production is very dull and may remember of the monumental old releases of Mayhem and a bit of Darkthrone, but when it regards the contents of the music it is miles away from these bands. Especially the drumming is very monotonous and dull, but that goes also for all other instruments. The best parts are the slow and heavy passages, because there is where Dimholt manages to make at least a bit of an impression. In all honesty it is no surprise that the band has released this EP by itself instead of through one of the over 666 independent black metal labels. Especially regarding the aspect of composing songs Dimholt has to make some serious progress before they might draw international attention and appreciation…

The first seconds of “Aegri Somnia”, Dimholt’s début ep, are very promising. A guitar subtly strums and howls eerily. They entitled this piece “Intro: Falling Asleep”, but that would have been more appropriate for what’s to come. After these first promising moments, the most monotone and powerless drums you’ll hear in a long time kick in. Combined with the typical Nocturno Culto-vocals and the thick layer of lo-fi (no-fi) guitar distortion they sound absolutely insignificant in this day and age.
The clean vocals that kick in after a while can’t save this song either, because though they have the element of surprise on their side, they don’t sound good either. Seriously guys, it’s cool you try to blend in your ‘own’ touch into the sound, but don’t let someone who has been on valium for three years do it! The lethargy they express is probably not what they intended, but if they did, it works in a negative and appalling way. Track three is where it gets better, even though it is still nothing to be proud of. The slow, dronish riffs manage to evoke a slight icy and cold feeling, but not nearly enough for another spin. Other bands do it a lot better anyway.
Then they fall back to their mediocre sound of the second song, until halfway during “Chaos Reborn”. The clean vocals, which are now more chant-like, finally sound convincing. It is but a faint little star in an infinite universe of darkness though, and should not be mistaken for “good” – just because the rest is bad.
Other than a few mildly interesting riffs and the part of “Chaos Reborn” I mentioned earlier, this is utterly boring. When you sound like a bad quality mp3 of the worst Darkthrone song in existence, you’re not going to make it.

Here we have some uncompromising Black Metal from Bulgaria. After a quiet and sinister intro “Falling Asleep”, all hell breaks loose on the track “Aegri Somnia”. This is basically how it stays for the rest of the album. Fast and furious battery and diabolical guitar work serve as the framework. Vocalist Monolithe spits and growls his way through some standard grizzly lyrics about death and less than hospitable weather conditions. There’s a short section of pagan moaning on “Aegri Somnia” and a spoken section but there’s no doubt where we stand. It’s the dark, vitriolic stuff of Koldbrann and the like. “Sein zum Tod” starts as more of a funeral march. The ferocity here is mixed with some slow-paced material and breaks which are designed for maximum discomfort. “… At the End …” has Monolithe growling out a story. The environment is created of a cold sun on a misty morning. “The wind is mourning, ever changing its tunes of sorrow”, he moans. The guitar blazes on, while the battery continues to be relentless. It is dark out there. “Chaos Reborn” is an exercise in violence and motion. The thrashing guitar could be regarded as melodic if it wasn’t so punishing. The mid-section is doomy and slower but instrumentally it’s soon back to sirening guitars and all-out action. Monolithe preaches gloom on “The Shades of Night” to the now customary background wall of frenetic sound. Again, to prevent us from being too comfortable, the pace drops down momentarily, picking up so that it’s blazing by the time of the sudden end. OK, it’s clichéd perhaps, but there’s no pretence at anything new. This is about harshness, agony and death.
As far as the overall impression is concerned, sometimes the vocals seem to be at odds with the thrashiness. There’s also a pagan atmosphere in there with the invocation of nature and occasional vocals. Where “Aegri Somnia” scores for me is in Dimholt’s excellent mastery of pace and control. The album’s sound quality is not fantastic, but it’s ok for a self-release and in any case Black Metal does not need crystal clarity to be effective and evil, which “Aegri Somnia” certainly is. There’s no scope for warmth here. It’s cold, sombre and merciless. Just the way we like our Black Metal to be.

The First Demo release of Bulgaria’s Dimholt has been released at the fall of 2007, but since a couple of days before reached me, I consider that it would be a good move to have this demo release in the Metalzone’s review pages.
The “Aergi Somnia” is a demo that has been heavily influenced from the Black metal scene and in specific by groups like Mayhem, Immortal and the older releases of Enslaved. The most positive points of this demo is the very good, frozen atmosphere that the band achieved through it’s music and the very good vocals by Monolithe, that hase been heavily influenced by the greatest black metal vocalists, Attila Csihar (Mayhem) and Abbath (Immortal)
The most negative points of this demo release is the lack of fantasy through their compositions and the drum machine, especially the tambourine that sounds like a metal tin, that has been inverted.
I believe that with a eatter production and a little bit of “originality” in their compositions Dimholt could be on of the leading black metal bands for the years to come. I also believe that the atmosphere, the amazing vocals and the “break outs” that do not sound “fake”, is their strongest point and they band need to invest on it.

Dimholt hail from Bulgaria and are a fantastic band whos music transcends the normal boundaries of the extreme metal genre without compromising any standards. Starting this EP off is the Intro " Falling Asleep " . This nice little amibent/acoustic piece sets the mood and lets you know you're in
for a real treat. Then comes the title track " Aegri Somnia ". While the drumwork here may sound monotonous, the freezing crunchiness of the guitar riffs, multiple vocal patterns and overall ambiance more than make up for this. Tracks " Sein zum Tod ", " At the End " and " Chaos Reborn " are all awesome tracks themselves. Excellent riffing and vocals wrap around the other elements evenly and the end result is some of the best
metal I haver heard yet this year. This band even incorporates a straight forward Death Metal vibe into their music and it really works for them. The last track " The Shares of Night " is probably the best track on the cd. Cold, dark and fucking grim as hell. Overall this EP is anything but standard. Superb musicianship 100% !... They definitely have a sound all their own. Try relating this band to other bands of this genre...You just cant do it. These guys are in a class by themselves. So, if you're in the mood for something out of the norm, then check out Dimholt. They trample all the garbage, bullshit bands to hell. Most definitely NOT a disappointing band !

Със заслужени угризения на съвестта и съжаление съм длъжен да призная, че макар да имаме известен брой хубави български групи, рядко обръщам внимание на това какво се случва на родната метъл сцена. И преди знаех, че постъпвам неправилно и донякъде може би неродолюбиво, глупаво, а след изслушването на демото на една млада блек група, създадена в Бургас – именно “Aegri Somnia” на Dimholt, имах още една причина да изпитвам силни угризения. Поне по отношение на блека в България съм слушал и забелязвал немалко банди, винаги чудейки се защо като че ли този стил на метъла процъфтява толкова много тук. И след запознанството ми с Dimholt, мога да споделя, че петорката изплува мноого над другите си колеги, дори и само с едно демо.
Интересно е заглавието на демото, идващото от латински – “Aegri Somnia”, в превод на родния ни език –“тежък сън”. Когато разбрах това, бях още по-възхитен, защото интрото, въвеждащо ни в тази мрачна приказка, пасва абсолютно правилно и точно на заглавието на албума – “Falling Asleep”. Слушателят действително бива успокоен от нежните, и все пак леко зловещи стартови нотки, за да заспи своя тежък сън под тъмния съпровод на петте други предложени ни песни. Едноименната “Aegri Somnia” задълбава в съня с ударен звук и бързина. Ето тук усетих още нещо, което ме впечатли и в голяма степен очарова при Dimholt – те някак балансират между по-тежкия, първичен блек, но намесват и мелодични партии, характерни за мелоблека, които само подсилват красотата на сътвореното от бургаската петорка. Припевът на “Aegri Somnia” е прекрасен пример за това:

Силна обреченост присъства в припева, в самата песен, написана от Monolithe, и в целия албум. Зад тази първичност и агресия се таят тъга, мъка и мрачни чувства, които без проблеми биха се вписали също в коя да е дуум група. “Sein Zum Tod” е по-бавна и провлачена (не в лошия смисъл), а вокалите на Monolithe изразяват доста силна доза скръб... (“Release this agony!”) “…At the end…” е написана от друг член на групата – Асен, но по никакъв начин не отстъпва на лириките, предоставени ни от Monolithe. Тежка равносметка бива извадена в края на агресивното парче, изказана с немалко горчивина, разкриваща истинската същност на човешкото същество – “The greed of man colored these lands... Bloodred”. Най-дългата и с най-апокалиптично име песен – “Chaos Reborn”, като че ли ми допадна най-много след “Aegri Somnia”. Не се усещат тези седем минути, които в доста случаи при определени групи се е случвало да продължават сякаш векове. Тук положението е тотално различно, и слушателят може да бъде само доволен от това. Мрачната, ту забързана, ту бавна, но винаги напрегната, никога спокойна, атмосфера бива продължена и завършена в последното парче – “The Shades of Night”. То, както и предишното, биват посочени като повлияни от “The Book Of Counted Sorrows” на Dean Koontz. Силен край - и музикално, и от текстова гледна точка, ни бива представен от бургазлиите:

To welcome the dawn and fear the night
Личи си, че Dimholt не разчитат само на агресията и като цяло не се опират само на звученето си, а са се постарали и при лириките – те са написани изключително интелигентно и многократно по-добре от тези на повечето други родни блек групи, чиито текстове съм имал “честта” да прочета.
Длъжен съм (но и по собствено желание, естествено) да поздравя Dimholt. Направеното от тях за мен надхвърля типичното за България звучене/продукция, както искате го наричайте. С такова начало съм силно обнадежден, без да правя излишни словоизлияния и театрални хвалби, и силно очаквам тяхната следваща стъпка, която се надявам да се състои. Поздрави на Monolithe, Асен, Станимир, Румен и Явор, и им пожелавам да изкачват успешно спиралата, от която толкова много падат. Ако повечето български групи бяха такива...

Впечатляващо демо на бургаските демони DIMHOLT. Бандата комбинира тежък агресивен блек метъл с тъмен бекграунд, който на моменти може да бъде сравнен с групи от ранга на ранните Darkthrone.
Грачещите вокали създаващи гробищна атмосфера, китарните рифове в стил "жужаща оса", барабаните - тип "мухобойка" съчетани на места с чистовокални припеви, образуват магнетична свирепа сила, която ти дава усещане за смърт. "At the end" осъзнаваш, че това е края.

Близо година вече се очаква по-усилено излизането на дебютната творба на Dimholt. Членовете на групата преминаха през доста трудности за да достигнат до този дебют. Разделени в различни точки на страната та дори и извън нея успяха да подготвят възможно най-качествено откъм техническа и разбира се музикална страна този демо диск. Смятам да премина малко към съдържанието на песните и после ще се върна пак около техническата част на изготвянето на диска.
Малко по-общо погледнато на нещата ще започна със забележките (и накрая ще направя и някой разяснения).
Качеството на звука не е перфектно, но смятам че е оптимално до нужното за да е усети пълното качество и музикално съдържание на песните. Малко съжалявам за това, че барабаните в демото са изцяло електронни (и за това ще обясня по-късно), защото групата има млад бързо учещ се барабанист, който би могъл отлично да замести електрониката в случая. Китарите на момента са малко заглъхнали, но това е от микрофона с който са правени записите (което важи и за баса и за вокалите). Басът пък от своя страна е може би малко по-тих от нужното, а вокалите като че трябва да се оттренират още малко има какво да се желае още и при тях.
Добрите страни са, че звученето не е в прагматичен блек метал стил, има разчупени ритми с китарите, много готини чисти вокални елементи. Младежите са се старали много и с минимални финансови средства са направили доста. Демото е изцяло записвано в домашни условия с едно малко кубе и кофти микрофон, от който са се получили и пращенията на моменти. Поради същата причина китарите са леко заглъхнали. За сметка на това обаче са доста разнообразни има на моменти някакви трашерски нотки, които ми грабват ушенцето...Песента "...At the End..." за мен е страхотна.
Слушах я вече над 5 пъти и след всяко слушане ми допада все повече. "Chaos Reborn" и "Sein zum Tod" не и отстъпват. Забелязах леко несъвпадение между сричкоразделянето и музиката в "The Shades of Night", но това вероятно ще се отработи и е причинено от бързоскоростния ритъм. Текстовете на песните са интересни, за да ги прочетете обаче ще трябва да си закупите и диска, който е на символична цена от 4 лева (почти покрива разходите за изработката му). Гланцирана цветна обложка..двустранна, цветно изображение върху самите дискове. Дизайна на обложката е супер готин.
И като финал мисля да пожелая успех на момчетата и дано попаднат на заинтересовани издатели, които да им осигурят една звукозаписна, за да може да чуете пълния потенциал на групата, а такъв със сигурност има.
